What is “streaming”?

Streaming is the act of accessing a piece of media from one device when the file itself is stored somewhere else. This allows all content to be stored, managed and protected centrally but be available to any device in the home

    Glossary

    Video Terminology:

Connections (in descending order of quality)

    • hdmi_000HDMI - stands for High Definition Multi-media Interface and is the new version of Scart in so much as it is a single cable to connect 2 devices where the cable carries both video and audio information
    • Component-CableComponent - A component cable can still carry a high definition signal to a TV but it is analogue and not digital like the HDMI. Therefore the quality of the cable has more of a bearing on the quality of the final image. The cable uses a red, green and blue plug at each end for the video and many cables include stereo phono connectors for left and right audio. If you are using an AV amplifier for surround sound you will need a separate digital audio cable (coax or optical/SPDIF) to carry the multi-channel audio stream
    • 503px-S-Video_Connector(jp)S-video – this is a single video cable with a multi-pin plug at either end. The quality is akin to an SVHS video recording and is a lowest common denominator connection for lots of equipment. The best resolution one can hope for is 480i for playing back a DVD recording. There is no audio stream with this connection
